Dragon canes - fire breathing, or just hot air and smoke?

So I have just purchased a brand new cane which has come from a knowledgeable supplier, and it is wonderful...

It was advertised as a 3ft long 10mm Dragon cane, and is exactly what I have sought for some time now. I have been aware that these Dragon canes are more ferocious than a standard type, due to being denser and heavier. Thus a heavy stroke can be condensed into a small diameter, and I am now tempted to try the 8mm version that was also available. But why has it taken me so long to find what I was looking for.
The answer is that many canes offered for sale are advertised as Dragon canes, purely I think to benefit from the reputation that these things have, but I have now discovered that most are not actually made from genuine Dragon ratton, and are effectively fake.
Excluding common garden bamboo, which is hollow and no good for caning at all, I have learned that there are two types of ratton that are used in genuine punishment canes. These are Kaboo and Dragon, and it is easy to tell them apart when you know what to look for.
Both are not hollow, and have micro pores running along their length, which can be seen from the end. However, the less severe Kaboo type have growth notches about every 8-12 inches along their length, while the Dragon type has these notches only about every 20-24 inches. So a 3ft long Draggon can should normally only have a single notch, or maybe two at the absolute most.
If the cane you own and thought was a ferocious Dragon cane has the closer notches, then you have been duped, and it's time to upgrade - trust me, it's well worth the expense!
