"Free and footloose !"

The new place was heavenly with warm days and delicious sunshine but the past wouldn't let go and going to the school reunion only dragged up painful memories and it was like God had dealt his hand by having the girl show up there too.
So I couldn't just pass it off like a bad dream because at least one other knew the truth, about that beating I'd taken and having the whole class hear my cries.
I had to resolve it somehow, maybe by tracking down every last one of them who were present that day and wiping the snide expression off everyone of their faces.
Well that might take some time but at least I had one of them, the girl.
It was simple , and I had my base far away to escape to.
I never thought of myself as a psychopath but they say they may appear to be just ordinary types on the surface, and you could bump into one on the street and not know anything about the dark secrets they kept inside.
But she was kinda sweet and my real grudge was against the teacher and there were a few old faces in the crowd and maybe luck would present her to me.
I wondered what fate held for her after her vile act.
Surely there'd be no reward for that.
I was telling the girl about the interesting life I'd set up and seeing her enthusiasm I decided to offer to show her the place and my work building the doomsday machines that got used in movies.
She'd meet the gang and in a quiet moment explain that awkward day to them and I'd get a good ribbing over that.
But I would no longer be the image of the brutal apocalyptic survivor that I'd built.
Maybe I didn't care as it was all about having a laugh anyway.
I'd built up a business of solving crimes not committing them and an item arrived through delivery that needed my attention.
It was a just a heavy ball, a cannon ball perhaps as I could see when I put it on the table that it had a tendency to want to sit on its flattened side, the side that had slammed into something solid.
They knew not to waste my time so I had to think this ball offered a clue about something and it just oozed about where it was found.
The swampy place that took my mind to the Floridean keys and the world of pirates and mercinaries and slave traders.
I decide to leave the ball sitting there and not focus on it and just let it tell its tale when it was ready.

Imagine my surprise when I found out that my opinion actually mattered!
