Different Types of Collars and Their Meanings

I was browsing the internet today and came across a bdsm page about accessories.
It turned out that there are different types of collars which I had no idea about.
So:
from a site: https://lovingbdsm.kaylalords./

Collars of Consideration
When you wear this collar, it means you’re under consideration be your partner’s slave or submissive. Think of it like a stepping stone collar. You can move up to a permanent collar if you both decide the relationship works or you can remove it if the relationship isn’t what you want.

Training Collars
In some kinky relationships, the next step after a collar of consideration is a training collar. Other kinksters might start with a training collar and ignore the collar of consideration. These collars are typically worn by slaves while they’re being trained. It’s a symbol of where they are in the process of their D/s relationship. Once training is complete or your Dominant feels like you’re properly trained, you may “level up” to a new type of collar.

Protection Collars
To most people in BDSM, collars symbolize ownership and protection of some sort. Many kinksters will see a collared submissive and assume they “belong” to someone. A protection collar affords the wearer the ability to be left alone by most other single Dominants without as much responsibility as someone in a training collar or collar of consideration. Don’t make light of this collar, though. While it’s worn, it signifies that a Dominant takes some kind of responsibility for the submissive wearing it. At the same time, that submissive represents the Dom providing protection.

Collars
A collar may be the most relaxed kind of collar of the bunch. This is the one you wear during a kinky scene. John Brownstone and I don’t follow any particular hierarchy of collars but we do believe in the collar. When he puts it around my neck – at the BDSM club or at home – my body and mind prepare itself for the kinky fuckery come. It’s useful (thanks the D rings on it) and also a symbol of our power exchange.

Day Collars
For the kinksters who want collar or be collared, the day collar is extremely useful. It’s often a piece of jewelry that can pass in the vanilla world. You and your partner know it’s a collar and what meaning it holds, but no one else does. You don’t have deal with awkward questions but also don’t have give up an important symbol of your kinky relationship. Some submissives have multiple styles so they’re always collared but have a look for every occasion. While I don’t have an official day collar, I do have a locking necklace that I never take off and is pretty enough get plenty of compliments.

Permanent Collars
A permanent collar, for some D/s relationships, symbolizes your status as a permanent D/s couple and is as binding as a wedding band. For some people, a permanent collar is a piece of jewelry that can be taken off but isn’t. For others, their collar has a locking mechanism and their Dominant has the key. This type of collar typically doesn’t come off for any reason. If it’s taken off, it can mean the relationship is over or yo
u’re taking a break from the D/s side of things.

It is a pity that the site does not show pictures of individual types. On the internet every page gives different information about their appearance.

Lots of protocol and "rules" in this world, I am not a student of protocol or really well read at all regarding others opinions about conforming to any set of rules. I only know that I have a deep desire to be the controlling personality, and I crave submission and cooperation from my partner. I want to explore the things that excite my mind without judgement regarding if I fit a set of rules or not. Really don't care much for rules and protocol. Be safe, be sane, do whats understood and agreed, tickle each others minds, forget the rules.

I can't help wondering whether the hierarchy of collars listed - consideration, training, permanent - is mainly an attempt to get us to buy more collars.

I have worn a "day collar" most of my life. They have been made of different precious metals. I love reaching up through out the day touching it knowing I belong to someone. It fills my heart. L

I have always had my submissive wear a day collar ,,, but most of the time they are made of a cloth material,, classy unless chosen otherwise,,, but always a eloquent appearance.

No, they're an outgrowth of when there was no such thing as the internet, munches and semi-public dungeon spaces: most BDSM was practiced in private homes that had the space for the equipment, extra bedrooms, etc. so a group could have a place to play, train, etc. The variety of collars, more metaphorical than physical, helped to organize things as group members would come and go, providing visual guidance on what varietes of interaction were considered appropriate by house owner. One basic collar might have something added or replaced to signify a new status, though, didn't mean a change required an entirely new one. The various collars in the list, for one to One relationships, were in contrast to subs having a House collar, i.e. available for any Dom to play with. This tended to cut down on unnecessary bloodshed when most Doms wore epees or sabers.

Day collars are de rigeur for any sub. I prefer a variety for different purposes - each specific to the situation

Personally, I think that wearing different collars depending on the circumstances of the status is a nice thing. For us women it is like jewelry - if the Dom wants to appreciate his sub, in this way he can do it. Unfortunately, guys think on the principle of extreme, for them white is white and black is black, nothing in between. The same principle applies to the collar - there is a collar or there is no collar - no variety.

Much like Shades of Gray, here is an instance where advertising has corrupted a very simple, intimate concept. The Dominant gives his submissive a collar. It is a symbol of an active relationship. In my experience, my collars have all been "Day Collars". Why would I give my submissive something that would cause her discomfort, either physically or emotionally? This type of collar (at a public mash) serves as a protection collar as well. Early on -- the first week of collar wearing -- it is a defacto consideration collar. Then training collars are more robust leather items that allow a submissive/slave to be led around like an animal by the neck. These types of collars can be given to a submissive that has been in a relationship for over a decade. They are not for an initiation but for more physical, gruelling types of repetitive exercises even an experienced submissive would undergo.

Lastly, there is the perspective that the collar exists for the pleasure of the Dominant, not the submissive. The submissive wears it knowing it pleases her Dom, and it becomes a symbol of the the joy she gives her Dominant. It does not become a piece of jewelry she enjoys separate from his existence, like a nice pair of leather boots.
