Dreams of my Master (1)

The Interview

After being out of work for months, I finally had a job interview.

I squeezed myself into a gray skirt and a pink blouse. My nail polish was matching the blouse's color. After an eternity I was finally happy with my hair and my make-up, got into some comfortable flats, a blazer matching the skirt and of I went.

A final look in the mirror confirmed what I was always thinking. That I looked like a train wreck.

I was supposed to be there at 4:30PM and I managed to be 15 minutes early.
After checking in at the front desk, a Lady from HR came and welcomed me; She asked some general questions, provided some additional information and ended up giving me a quite sizable stack of forms to fill out.

She led me to a small office, that was furnished with a round table, 6 chairs, a computer and some video equipment. I hung my blazer over one of the chairs and she told me, that the interview would be conducted by the head of the company. I had until 5:15PM to fill out the paperwork. With that she left me alone with the papers.

I had 30 minutes to fill out everything and got a little nervous. But I managed to be done exactly by 5:15PM. Just after adding my last signature to the last paper, there was a knock on the door.

In came a tall, middle aged African American man, who introduced himself as the owner and CEO of the company. His handshake was just right, not bone-breaking and not too soft. His hands were warm, not sweaty cold.

But I hardly remember any of that. Since he had spoken the very first word, I was completely taken by his voice. A very deep, gentle voice. He was talking fast, but in a calm manner, not nervous, and very secure.

He sat at the table, gave me an introduction about himself and the company. His eyes were focused on me the whole time and there was something like a smile in his eyes.

It made me nervous. I had to lower my eyes and started staring at the tabletop. Looking up just every now and then to show that I was paying attention. Only to discover that this hint of a smile had turned into an open undeniable smile. He looked more than amused.

He turned to the papers I had filled out and asked a few questions about them. He asked if I was timely, could work under intense pressure and come to work even when I was in pain. That question was very irritating. What in the world was he talking about?

Then he asked, if I could follow orders. And like I am, sometimes I don't think much, because the answer seems so clear, I said: “If the order makes sense, of course I would obey, but if it was questionable to me, I would voice my concern”
His reply: “ So you would argue with me”
I: “ I would not call it argue, Sir. Just an exchange of different opinions”

He started laughing. I was sure, that he would say “Thanks, but no thanks” at any moment.

He stopped laughing and said: “We will get along just fine” He was grinning from ear to ear.

“ Be here tomorrow morning at 6:00AM. I will take care of your initial training”

He helped me into my blazer, very lightly touching my neck and my hair, and then lead me back into the lobby.

He shook my hand and said “ Be in time tomorrow. I know what to do with ladies, who do not listen. Have a good night.”

I drove home in a daze, wondering if I should show up the next day.

At home, I prepared everything for the next morning, had dinner, watched the news and went to bed. Trying not to think about him.
