The perch

The scholar took in the scene outside his window. Birds flew high in the sky enjoying the summer day. Behind him, his little bird sang from her gilded cage, which brought a smile to his face. A flash of colour drew his attention, and there at his feeder was a tiny hummingbird. Her colour and fragility made his heart stutter and his chest puffed out at her obvious enjoyment of his nectar. The little bird drew deeply and satisfied her thirst, and he knew that the little bird would continue to come back as long as he kept the feeder filled. Perhaps one day he could add the little thing to his own collection. His sights however, were drawn to another flock of birds playing nearby and he missed the hummingbirds struggle. For as much as she enjoyed the nectar provided, he had not left a perch for her to stand on. Her tiny wings could only flap for so long before exhaustion would overwhelm her. Having no other choice, the little bird flew away, and amongst the chaos of nature outside, the worldly scholar missed it. He turned back to the feeder, finally remembering the tiny bird who took such pleasure in his nectar, and was disappointed to see her gone.

Little birds of every colour visited him that summer, but the tiny hummingbird did not. Perhaps she had found a new feeder, or perhaps she had been captured by another, he would never know. It was not till the end of the summer that the scholar realized that if he added a little perch to his feeder, that the birds would rest a bit longer and he could enjoy them more.
