Here's my non-scientific way of looking at it:
If it's a possible answer to the question "What are you feeling right now?", then it's an emotion.

In my mind (and body) it is a state of being that I cannot control. So could be emotion or not. But I love the feeling.

Desire in it's many forms is emotional including the desire for intra-human contact.. Yes, I would say it is a form of emotion. Longing, desire, the want of physical contact, platonic or carnal.
