Snake Crossing...

Living off a undulating dirt road has it's challenges... My car certainly hates it so about 5 or mph is my max speed...

When pac looked up yesterday this snake was crossing in front of her on the road.. The
non poisonous Sonoran Gophersnake is probably the most visible snake in Az. Due to it's ability too adapt too life in the city...

It certainly resembles a rattlesnake in how it looks and acts... As it will open it's mouth to make a hissing sound if threatened, and coil itself up....

Not all snakes are bad or even poisonous. The Gopher snake is great at pest control. And it can even help keep other poisonous species away...

Just a FYI when your out in the desert....

Hey pac

as the weather cools, they will come indoors.. especially if the local deer mice or house mice do (they love ready made shelter against the cold) hit me up in my mail if you want some non chemical dyi ways of avoiding either scenario

Hey Twisted...

If they get closer I certainly will... It's nice to know there are ways to keep them on the outside where they belong...

Thanks for sharing that info...

As a child playing at my grandmothers house we thought she had lost her marbles when we'd see her put moth balls in the flower gardens around her house. I've come to find out that moth balls are toxic to snakes and are an immediate repellant to them.
I have actually used them in basements polluted with black snakes and rat snakes when doing service calls and can attest that they will clear a path instantly.

Oh, I just hate snakes. I have a black snake, a good snake, that lives around my townhouse. I know it's a good snake but when I run into him or find his snake skin in my shed I just tend to let out a little scream

Ohh drmgirl..
If I saw a snake skin in my shed I would probably scream to..

A healthy distance is how I feel about snakes to..

IN Holland we have one species of snake, it is called an adder.

It is not poisonous, it is rather small and keeps out of the way of humans.Ï once saw one in the forest.
In Spain there was this very green snake, who also was very fast, to get away!
I am not afraid of snakes, just keep a respectful distance.. and stay very still.

I am not exactly scared of them.. But I did have a rattle snake encounter once.. I heard that rattle and jumped backwards.. One of the scariest sounds I ever heard..

Now... I just keep my distance and admire them.. Have pics of rattle snake at the golf course just enjoying the grass and heat. They are awesome when not being threatened..
Thanks for sharing rose..

We have a few varieties up here despite the cold winters. I use moth balls at the corners of my garage doors to keep out the snakes and to a lesser extent mice.
Rat snakes (sometimes called black snakes) and Garter snakes are the most common. And the moth balls work well on them. When the crops come off the fields the snakes look for other cover, garages and sheds are prime realestate.

It's really nice to know those mothballs work so well on many types of snakes.. I really had no idea the snakes could survive in really cold weather?? They certainly would have to find hiding spaces..

Thanks for your story chameleon...
