WTF is wrong with people?

Who drive around railroad gates that are down on a train track, with the lights flashing??

It means a train is fucking coming! And on Thanksgiving no doubt, returning home from dinner.

A elderly couple in Kansas decided this was a good idea. Disregard the gate and just haul ass. Guess what? They got stuck on the track. With a freight train barreling towards them!

They were pushed down the track between 1/2 to 1 mile. Then the vehicle caught fire and they were not able to be rescued... All because they did not want t o wait a few minutes for a train!

Wow! Words continue t o fail pac. Because people do this shit everyday!

Pac, there a re a number of shortages in the world - respect - fairness - understanding and patience .. just to name a few.
Unfortunately the whole Covid situation has also highlighted the shortage in rational thinking, and the monumental surplus of stupid decision making.
You can't fix people or change the world, just don't be at the front of the line when strangers start giving away free koolade.

Ohhh shit chameleon!

You phrased it wonderfully...

The pessimist sees the dark tunnel.

The optimist sees the light at the end of the tunnel.

The realist sees two lights at the end of the tunnel.

And the engineer sees three idiots standing on the tracks.

pac369 replies on 11/26/2021 4:10 pm:
Exactly right mstraesop...

There is an Engineer who did nothing wrong, who gets to live with the guilt of killing a couple on Thanksgiving! No matter how much counseling you go to. That will never change for whoever was driving that train!

Said it before and I'll say it again...you can't fix stupid.

Thinking about it I guess some situations are what I'm going to call "Darwin Filters", the kind of things that eliminate people who have low potential for survival and remove themselves from the gene pool

We've had the same stupitity over here in the UK.
A few years ago a similar thing happened over here except it derailed
the train & there were injuries & death on the train not just the people
in the car. Trains they're just to big to play chicken with, plus they tend
not to swerve.

A few years ago an electrician I worked had a son who was a train driver.
He had someone step in front of his train on purpose. He had to give it up
after that, just couldn't face going back to it.

pac369 replies on 11/26/2021 6:21 pm:
Yeah Dave...

Trains can't swerve even if they want to!

I had my only major accident training to be an Engineer... A mini-van trying to play chicken with me. Besides serious injuries for people being thrown out of the vehicle, a 2-year-old child died...

Every time I drove my train over a crossing the next 9 years there was always that split second of apprehension, wondering if it would happen again?

Your friend's son will always live with that death, even though he didn't do anything wrong! Just like I do!

pac

This is so sad and , and you say, so unnecessary!

They do have the Darwin Awards for these people!

I watched the ambulance zig zag through the gates as the train at 60 to 80 mph almost hit them, the engineer hit the emergency brakes. How much damage was done to the brakes and wheels I don't know but the train took more than a mile to stop because it cleared the crossing. The ambulance was still on the other side at the gas station, the staff getting coffee.

pac369 replies on 11/26/2021 7:24 pm:
Wow Joseph..

Interesting story...

A emergency application of the brakes doesn't hurt the brakes or wheels generally. It's just "dumping" all the air evenly through all the cars at the same time. Probably would see sparks from all the friction though.

And at full speeds a freight train would take around a 1/2 mile to mile to stop, depending on how heavy it is...

Thanks for sharing..

It happens quite a lot around here as there are many crossings - usually its a lazy farmer leaving a tractor and trailer across the line while he opens the gates, but on the rare ones the driver drives around the half barriers.

There was one of an old man who was out with his grandson, and for no reason just drove round the barriers into the path of a fast passenger train - the old man and the kid were killed instantly, the train driver was injured physically and mentally, and a number of passengers had to have treatment, all due to the actions of the individual ........ he'd never done it before, and nobody knew why that day, especially with his grand-kid sitting next to him.

It's just sad to hear of the loss of life , and lives changed due to one episode of stupidity.

D-J xx

Yes davina...

It's beyond sad... There's never no coming back from a bad train mistake. Can't tell how many stories I have heard similar to yours. With people only doing something stupid that "one" time.

Thanks for sharing your comments..

You can't fix stupid!

One might say it got fixed in this case. How sad that it happened .... I agree - WTF is wrong with people?

I remember seeing the aftermath of a pickup & train collision when I was in high school. The trains went by my hometown FAST, as in FAST. I'm not sure what the circumstances were, but, to this day, I remember what the remains of that pickup looked like. I have been paranoid/respectful of train tracks ever since. I always stop when it's indicated to do so and will look both ways about 100 times. My head is on the proverbial swivel.

pac369 replies on 11/27/2021 6:45 am:
Wow Plz!

I am sure that accident site stayed with you. As they are always horrific, especially at high speeds... Head being on a swivel around tracks is never a bad thing... I do it all the time..

In my original RR training. While our train was stopped, I crossed the tracks to use the bathroom. Trying to return to my train I saw train headlights. I had no idea how far away they were from me. I probably could have crossed over 10 times. But I was so scared I waited for the train to pass me before I crossed those tracks again... A respect for trains is never a bad thing!

Welcome to kansas...where this happens more than you think...

Am i suprised that people dont want to wait behind a train?

Fuck most people dont want to be stuck behind my truck doing the legal speed limit

pac369 replies on 11/27/2021 7:13 am:
I hear you likes...

And I saw it a lot from my time in Kansas. Also did a lot of training in Olathe, I think that's how you spell it?

No one wants to wait on trains because they are so long now, usually over a mile. And it does take a while to get over 100 cars through that crossing...

And yeah.. I would probably pass you to!

I was once in a train who did have this kind of "accident".
I thought someone had trown a bike on the rails!
The train did not had high speed at that moment

All the doors & windows closed immediately.
The train stopped in the middle of nowhere, and police and ambulance folks walked past the train to pick off human remains, off the train!
They had like baking trays in their hands and very big tweezers.
It was horrible.
The fire brigade did hose down the train, before we could move on.

That crossing was known as a suicide crossing....
The engine-driver did look like wet newspaper, totally in shock!
it was awfull.

I always wait!

It took me a halve a day to come to my appointment, way too late, offcourse.

pac369 replies on 11/27/2021 12:17 pm:
Yes rosa..

It's always that way. The Conductor on a passenger or freight train gets the horrible job of removing body parts!

Happens to Amtrak and passenger trains quite a bit. People choose trains to kill themselves, because there will be no mistakes. Many lay down in between the rails. And no engineer will see them until they almost run them over.

Glad to hear you always wait!

"Trains can't swerve even if they want to!"

Yep, thats what makes them such a bad choice to play chicken with.

I'm so sorry to hear about your accident. Not your fault of course,
even so, I can only imagine how hard that is to deal with.
