We all should be very vigilant during the vetting process and in the early periods of a dynamic. But vigilance should not stop just because trust builds. People evolve over time. What was once unthinkable by a person, may become thinkable. While it is a Dominant’s responsibility to see to the safety of their submissive, the submissive themselves are the last line of safety and defense if the Dominant evolves in a way that is a danger to the submissive’s safety. I’ve always felt that as a Community we need to be vigilant as well. Always on the lookout for predators and scammers so we can warn others in the Community about the dangers we see. Our vigilance in this area could save another Community member from a traumatic experience and protect the Community from bad publicity and reputation. Novices, especially need our vigilance as they learn what they need to know to protect themselves. Some will say that it is each of our own responsibility and that if someone gets themselves in trouble, it’s their own fault. I say bad things can happen to anyone, even the most experienced. And a Community that doesn’t protect one another and help one another doesn’t deserve to be called a Community. We have no “BDSM Police Force” to help those in need.
