Without the knowledge you are at the mercy of the predators

Having a knowledge of BDSM or
of the fetishes that you most want
to explore does not protect you
from predators.
BDSM is afterall, only a type of sexual
practice. Very few people live BDSM
as a "lifestyle". Most people don't live
in the roles full time but may engage
a portion of the power exchange.
Fatal outcomes of BDSM plays are rarer
than autoerotic fatalities and natural
deaths related to sexual activities.

 Predators are a bad fact of
life and the internet.
The idea that BDSM is inheritly
violent an dangerous is a myth.
For millions of participants its
far more a sexual dimension than
anything more seriously.

 Learning safety measures that are basic to vetting and learning what is ACTUALLY part of the life style CAN save you from predators. Predators seek those that don't know what to expect and pounce... But I guess you've never been in that position, and don't give a shit if others are.
