Freedom in Services I found myself in a discussion of slavery on another member's blog. The postings touched on both the historical institution and the a modern (consensual) sexual practice. This discussion got me to thinking, always a dangerous state of affairs. Now I should say right at the beginning that I am white and live in Western Canada. I mention this because I am aware that the issue of slavery touches a deep emotional cord within many members of the American public, particularly those with an African heritage. As someone outside American society, I feel I have no right nor sufficient understanding to engage in any discussion related to the historic institution of slavery in North America. Likewise, there is currently a problem with enual slavery in North America and other parts of the world. Even in my own city there are women imported from other countries and forced to work in the sex trade. I will say flatly that it is an abhorrent practice and those responsible should be strung up by their privates using piano wire. Having said all that, there is the topic of voluntary sexual slavery which is a whole other matter. In the other blog, I had commented that one might find freedom in slavery. It seems an odd concept but may not be as odd as it seems at first glance. I believe that the freedom offered by voluntary sexual slavery arises from two sources. The modern world places a lot of pressure on us. And we add to that pressure with our own expectations regarding our behaviour and abilities. We required to constantly make decisions. We are constantly responsible for those decisions. And me must constantly revisit and revise them as the world or our expectations change. This is also true within a typical sexual context. We must decide what to do and when. Often the situation is ambiguous. Regardless of the expectations of our partner, we can place upon ourselves a substantial burden to perform. In addition, there can be anxiety about committing certain acts. If boundaries are pushed or taboos broken, there can be a residual sense of uncertainty or trepidation. There may be doubt. Even guilt. this can get in the way, limiting the potential for simple enjoyment. For a sexual slave, these burdens are largely removed. All that is left is the need to obey and even this requirement is removed if bondage is involved. A slave in bondage can only experience, even the ability to act has been removed. Responsibility is lifted. Ambiguity is gone. The slave's role is reduced to the simplest possible element. Their role is focused and clear. And that can be liberating. |
