Preaching to the Perverted

“Preaching to the Perverted” (1997) – Stuart Urban

The story in this film is fairly simple. Government conservative moralists seeking political fodder decide to infiltrate a notorious sex club to gather evidence and enforce a little used law and shut down these “dens of sin”. Using the trope of the young Christian college computer geek being sent in as undercover spy, the politicians are provided video evidence of sexual perversions via hokey “Risky Business-like” shades (hey, it was 1997). Our young Christian crusader descends into this world with both in trepidation and curiosity. The story being what it is one can determine the outcome.

The key to watching this film is to remember that it is an act of British tongue-in-cheek. It is perfectly fine to laugh during this film, and the pony scene late in the film confirms this.

Another must is to not view it from a current perspective nor a North American one. The film was released ten years ago, which means it went into development at least another three before that. Times have changed, at least here.

Having interacted with people who were in Britain at that time they have confirmed both the stoic moralist position that pervaded the ruling class as well as the hypocrisy that this film attempts to reveal. While making this film there are tales of the prop acquisition department not being able to access the most basic items because film services did not want to be associated with the content of the film. Ironically the fetish items were the easiest to acquire.

Members of this site have also confirmed through the retelling of their own experiences in the fetish clubs of the early 90’s, like “Club Flesh”, that the performances and attendees portrayed in the film are not that far off the mark. Visually the film is quite stunning at times, in set design, costumes, and lighting.

In terms of the kink portrayed, there is something for everyone. Pretty much every activity is covered from verbal control right up to being covered with fireworks and ignited. It does come off as a kind of “shopping list” of kink in its attempt to cover it all, but again, don’t fault the film for trying to reveal more than two flavours.

There is another attraction in this film … the actress Guinevere Turner. Turner plays the dominatrix club owner. Her portrayal alone is worth the viewing. This is particularly interesting when one delves into Turner’s portfolio of work. Turner has penned the screenplays for “Blood Rayne” (2005); “The Notorious Betty Page” (2005); “American Psycho” (2000); “Hung” (2005); “Hummer” (2003); “Spare Me” (2001) … as well as directing the last three. She has also written for and appeared in the series “L-Word”. Turner is considered a “lesbian-icon” (not my words), and is very active in gay rights and independent films dealing with the lesbian/bi experience. It is no wonder that her actions with her female slave in the film seem to ring true. For women who are fans of her, this movie will be a savory treat.

With all that, this film is best enjoyed with some social and additive stimulation. Gather some friends and have a good time. Don’t let the hokey stuff get in the way.

Note: I first saw this film in 1998 as part of a social science research course. My now dear friend “Cyber Cyn” showed it as an example of participant observation and issues of disclosure and ethics. At the time I couldn’t help thinking that C.C. herself was covertly disclosing something. My inquiries will be left unsaid.

Note: In the series “Taxicab Confessions” there is a NYC cab ride that has a woman with a wonderful Parisian accent attempting to seduce the woman cab driver. It is a wonderful piece of seduction that I recommend to many women I know. There is a myth out there claiming the passenger is Guinevere Turner. They definitely have similar looks, and Turner a public record of such desire, but I am not entirely convinced because of the accent. I am sure you could search this video clip on the web somewhere and judge for yourself.

Thank you very much for the extended review. I've seen this movie for sale at a few places but resisted purchasing because I'd heard so very little about it. All of the reviews I found online were minimal at best.

I think I'll buy it now.
