Getting to the Truth I often find more truth in fiction and comedy than anywhere else. Think of the history books we learned from. The fiction of the eras gives us a real feeling for the people and times. It’s not necessarily easy to get to the truth. Reading between the lines is a skill to be continuously cultivated. Truth has often carried a steep price so writers have had to develop clever ways of disguising it. Of course actions often speak volumes. |

This post reminds me of a passage in a book I'm reading, Writing To Change The World by Mary Pipher. In the first chapter of the book, she talks about how one work of powerful writing can literally change a person. The first book that did that for her was The Diary of Anne Frank. She read it at age 12. She hadn't realized up until then that people were capable of such horrors especially killing children. The Holocaust became a full blown reality to her. She refers to it as "losing her spiritual innocence." It's strange because I read that book at about the same age and remembered feeling that way myself. It haunted me for weeks. I don't know if this fits in with what you were saying but it's what came to mind for me. Take care.

I think it fits in with what I was saying because at age 12, you both had an image of the world which was an incomplete picture. It was a controlled image your parents and the education system let you see. Suddenly, you discovered another part of the human condition that you were previously shielded from which is dark and ugly. It was unpleasant and unnerving yet was truth. Thank you for sharing this. Writing not only can change a person but can change the course of history. All revolutions began with literature, art, music and other forms of expression. That's one reason so many books have been burned and writers dealt with harshly throughout history. Have a lovely day ps.
