Looking Beyond Skin Deep

Amidst the discussion of my Barbie post yesterday, I reached back to Richard Cory, the poem by Edwin Arlington Robinson which encapsulates the idea of “the grass is always greener on the other side” (everyone envies the rich guy’s seemingly perfect life only to discover he is more depressed than everyone else).

Whenever Richard Cory went down town,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean-favoured and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good Morning!" and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich, yes, richer than a king,
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine -- we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked and waited for the light,
And went without the meat and cursed the bread,
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet in his head.

That is so true and so beautifully said. I've rarely encountered vacant people in my life.

Oh yes, I've met many of them but they don't find their way into my life! I should've been more clear about that. I think we all have met our fair share and yes, some of them fit your vivid description perfectly! There really is something about those vapid eyes!!!
