the meaning behind the answer "nothing" when you ask what is wrong

As time goes by in all relationships there are times that you >the female< is asked if something is wrong. The typical answer many times is,,, nothing.
This answer has been known to strike fear in the hearts of courageous men. We know that there are several layers to the answer of "nothing"
1) everything is fine and there is nothing wrong.
2) we are not sure if you did something wrong,,,not sure if we have a reason to be cranky. this by itself is upsetting to us. so,,,the answer really is nothing for this one. we are just going to mull it over for a bit.
3) you did/said something that hit a nerve with us. it isn't something that is really wrong. but it did upset us.
4) run for the hills. there really is something that is wrong. our mind is trying to decide how to tell you what is wrong so that you will understand exactly why we are upset with you. or we could just be deciding on just how long will it take karma to catch up to you or taking it into our own hands and be madam karma.

If someone feels the need to ask if something is wrong, then something is wrong. A dominant should be in tune with his sub or slave. There should be a constant flow of communication. If he's to the point of asking her what's wrong then he hasn't been a good master..That's how I see it anyway. Maybe that's just me.
