'Prince of Dreams'

I have lots of dreams when I sleep at night, and sometimes I have those dreams that you never want to wake from. The best dream that I ever had was a very detailed one, where for weeks later, I always hoped I would go back to that dream each time I curled up to go to sleep. It was one of those dreams where it felt so real you could have sworn it was reality.

In the dream I was a prince. My parents were very strict and frowned upon mixing with the "common people," yet somehow I met a gypsy girl and she stole my heart. As the dream progressed my parents found out about my love for the gypsy girl and forbid me from seeing her.

I spent long hours locked in a tower unable to go see her, but was allowed out when it was the festival of the full moon. The festival of the full moon was a celebration of life with dancing and fireworks within the grounds of the castle where I lived. During the celebrations I was approached by a young urchin who asked me to follow her for she was sent by her mistress the gypsy girl. To escape the castle became an adventure in itself… for somehow my parents became aware of what was happening and tried to prevent it but eventually I escaped through the sewer tunnels beneath the castle.

Once out of the tunnels I found my love waiting for me under the moonlight. We embraced quickly and then she said we must hurry before we are followed. She said some words of magic and I felt a tingle up my spine and without any fear realised she had transformed me into a wolf. She said follow me for tonight is the night our moon aligns with the moon of your world and we can cross the barriers between our worlds… for I am not a gypsy but actually a fairy princess.

Surprised yet still totally in love with the girl before me I followed. We ran for what seemed like eternity but was most likely a brief moment under the light of the moon. We arrived at a moonlit glade with a ring of Stones around it. I was transformed back to my normal human self and asked to step into the circle of Stones. My love stepped into the circle as well and then began to chant. Suddenly the very air rippled before me and I found my self in a beautiful glade that was vibrant with the rich colours of Nature. I could hear music being played nearby. My love took my hand and gently guided me towards the music. It was then I noticed that my love was indeed a fairy, for she had wings. The wings looked to be spun of a fragile fine glass like material or gossamer for they reflected the light much like a mirror.
We emerge from the trees that she had been guiding me through, to be welcomed by a scene out of a fairy book. In front of me was a very large moonlit glen that had a bonfire at it centre. Around the bonfire danced many fairies and other animals and creatures of mythology. As we moved towards the circle a hush settled over the creatures and the music slowly stopped. From within the circle a beautiful woman was carried forth and I instantly recognised this woman as my loves mother. For this was the fairy queen. I lowered myself to one knee and paid homage to the woman before me who seemed to embody the very exuberance of nature. The queen seemed to see right through my very being and then nodded and said welcome. As quickly as that the music began again and I was swept up by the dancing creatures and eventually found myself dancing around the bonfire in the arms of my love.
It was then that a feeling of contentment came over me. One I could not hope to describe but to give it a shot, it was a feeling of peace, happiness and rightness.

Then I woke up. I still hope to one day enter back into that dream. It is said that once a person glances upon the world of the fairies that reality becomes a pale thing. In some ways I think that might be just so.

I have written a poem about this dream. Nothing special but it summed up my feelings.

Prince of Dreams

I dream of the dream that one should never wake from.
The dream where my fairytales are true.
Where I am a Prince,
Who finds his Fairy Princess.
Where love is eternal,
and happiness is forever.
Oh sweet slumber, claim me now.

Illusions are often better than reality but only if you believe in them
