The Final Lover

The bright sunshine is eroded,
By gloomy shadows lengthening,
Creeping across the ground,
Swallowing the warmth.

Their cool fingers reach out to me,
Beckoning me to them,
Seeking to feed upon the fragile warmth,
Created by the flickering flame of my soul.

Their touch at first send chills of alarm,
My skin erupting in goose bumps at first,
My body valiantly offers a shiver,
Refusing to go without a fight.

Numbness spreads over me,
Embracing me like a lost lover.
Whispering sweet lullabies
As my lids drift shut.

Relentlessly the cold caresses continue,
Reaching deeper within me.
The shadow hands tenderly cup my soul,
A gentle sigh and the flame is extinguished.

Illusions are often better than reality but only if you believe in them
