Romney Saves America's Honor

By becoming the first Senator to vote to convict a president of his own party in an impeachment trial, Mitt Romney has struck a blow for honor and decency that will echo for as long as America is remembered in the annals of history.

Before he became president, John F Kennedy wrote a little book entitled "Profiles in Courage." You can still find it in some libraries. It was about people in public life, all men as I recall... it was a different age, who took courageous stands in the service of their civic duty. I also recall that most of them were in elected offices, and virtually all of them were defeated for re-election.

That tells you something about them, and also about us. Recognizing what is right, is not easy. Doing what is right is harder. Doing what is right and being rewarded for it in political life is almost impossibly rare.

We stand now at the hinge of American history. Self interest is the watchword of the day. The Greatest Generation is gone. The dignity and self sacrifice that the men of the 442nd regimental combat team, Senator Daniel K. Inouye and his comrades in arms, represented when so many of them went into public service is almost forgotten.

So we should celebrate this day, when a good, decent man, about whom you could say when he ran for president "I favor the other candidate, but if Romney wins I know the nation will be in good hands" shows us the meaning of honor.

Vindman is the real standup guy. I think Romney did it as an attention-getter.

I agree with you about Vindman. Romney is no John McCain, but nobody in political life is a saint. What Romney did got him tarred and feathered by the sycophants in his own party. I think, like the "Duke" in Huckleberry Finn, he'd "just as soon have passed it up if it wasn't for the honor."

There isn't anything"noble" about what Romney did. He is a politician, and he has always gone whatever way the wind blows. Started as a liberal in 94. He is a TV whore and not much more than that. CNN will scoop him up and put him on a panel next to lying under oath McCabe.

Jesus Christ, man! Do you ever read what you write? What the fuck was Donald J. Moop but a candy-assed media whore for Howard Stern, calling his own daughter a "piece of ass" before he decided he was a Republican? He didn't even wait for the whitewash to dry before he changed parties. He is a TV whore and not much more than that. When Bloomberg retires him, FOX will scoop him up and put him on a panel along with anyone who can stand the stench of sitting next to him. Romney, on the other hand, will stay right where he is in the Senate. He isn't going anyplace. The voters in Utah respect both religious faith and integrity.

So, now can anyone get another government to mess in our elections or is it just the president?

Only the king is above the law.

Unfortunately, much as I predicted when the impeachment started, the first wave would succeed, and then die in a very short time in the 2nd phase. The GOP would go with party loyalty. The system as a whole is corrupt.

Now if the upcoming elections mean the Republicans lose a few seats, that's about the only way America can get them a message of "you done fucked up"
But it doesn't matter. Nostradamus had made his mentionings on the people would fall for a false trumpeter. Maybe our country really is on it's way to a civil war in the near future. At this point, all you can do is grab the snacks and watch the world burn.

Dreamcatcher__ replies on 2/7/2020 8:06 am:
You probably should be more specific about "lose a few seats." The Republicans will celebrate losing only a few seats in the House of Representatives. What would be fatal would be to lose three or more seats in the Senate, which probably will only happen if Bloomberg becomes the Democratic candidate and buys three or four Senate seats with a massive infusion of cash into a few select races.

No offense intended, my friend, but people who quote Nostradamus are out to lunch. Quoting Niccolò di Bernardo dei Machiavelli produces better results.

I'm disappointed that someone didn't make a motion for a secret ballot. Perhaps more senators would have voted to remove Trump from office. I think many were afraid of Trump's vindictiveness.
I agree and how great to see Orange spitting from his mouth with rage trying to find out who voted which way.

Was it ever considered?

Dreamcatcher__ replies on 2/7/2020 7:49 am:
No, it wasn't considered, probably because it was a two-edged sword that would have been voted down. Under the Senate rules, any senator can ask for a roll call vote. It's supposed to be a way to ensure transparency and accountability, so citizens can see how their senators voted. Since this was an impeachment trial, it would have required an amendment to the procedures established by McConnell and agreed on at the beginning of the trial to get a secret ballot, which would have suffered the same fate as all the other Democrats' attempts to amend the procedures.

That's a noble sentiment, twosharp, but McConnell was never going to lose control to that extent.
