Amarushataka: Erotic love poems from India

An incredibly busy week with no time, alas, to read or blog! But at last the week closes and the weekend beckons ... with sun, friends, good conversation and good food.

And, of course, time to read, and soothe the soul!

I recently acquired a beautiful little volume of poetry - a translation of the "One Hundred Poems of Amaru" or, in the orginal Sanskrit, Amarushataka. This isn't a new book - other hands have caressed it and other eyes beheld it prior to mine. Perhaps other tongues have also relished reading its soft phrases aloud ... enjoying the feel of the plump words dropping from one's lips. Many years ago in her novel "Fugitive Pieces" Anne Michaels wrote ... 'Reading a poem in translation…is like kissing a woman through a veil'. After reading that all those years ago I have always been somewhat conscious of it when reading poetry originally created in another language - but this little book of poems translated by Andrew Schelling is beautiful. Yes - the translation may have indeed created different poems than the originals, but these are heartfelt offerings; offerings bringing life back to these 1300-year old poems, and each erotic in their own right.

And I find myself wondering about them:
- are the 101 poems all about the same two lovers?
- if so, do they track the growth of ecstasy through a period of years?
- or is each poem an offering to a different love?

63
... no scowling, no biting the lip when her hair's gripped.
Even opens her limbs compliantly when I'm rough ...

34
... look at me, collapsed at your feet.
She winced, jerked her tearful eyes aside ...

75
...why treat your man with contempt
when he lies at your feet? ...

No matter which it is, these 101 little gems certainly run the gamut of erotic experience - from the shattering of shy innocence through the erotic tempest of argument and discord followed by the reconciliation of violent sex. Each one is delicious to read and savour.

And keep in mind, as Robert Frost says ...
^^ Poetry is a way of taking life by the throat ^^
