As a child growing up, I was taught manners. Some of you might even remember the magic words Captain Kangaroo taught us ... "Please" and "Thank you". I was taught manners by my parents, grandparents and in my college years, by my fraternity. It was in college I was taught men walk on the street side when walking done a sidewalk with a woman.

I hear ya. I'm not sure everyone here in the peanut gallery would consider this 'manners' per se, but I always paid for literally everything when I took a lady out on a date. The concept of going 'Dutch' never crossed my mind. Even if a lady would offer to pay for something, my answer was always an emphatic "No, I've got this.".

In today's world, I think the concept of the man paying for everything has changed. I'm not sure when things changed, but I think the younger generation is more comfortable with the concept of going 'Dutch'. The idea almost gives me the willies .... In the world I live in, the man pays.

I agree 100% ... It can get expensive - and it normally does over the course of time, but it's just a part of 'courtship' in my mind. If you're gonna date, you're gonna spend money - It's a simple formula. I bet most of the men in my generation reading this agree with us. We were raised differently than 'most' of today's youth.

Even when my bothers come to visit, they always treat me to dinner. My Dad demanded manners as that is how he was raised. Nowadays, if it's a true date and I make the invitation I have no problems picking up the tab.

I hear ya .... When I round up my sisters and their husbands once a year for dinner, it's a 'given' that I pick up the check. If they're in town for something and we meet for lunch/dinner - Same rules apply.

Hmmmm ..... I'm assuming you're referring to same sex dating?
If so, I agree whomever asks the other out picks up the tab. It's simply 'understood'.

this is a great topic. it's hard to know what "manners" means these days.

Well, just paying attention to Captain Kangaroo and saying "Please" and "Thank you" is a good start. One thing that drives me nuts is when you hold the door open for someone to enter/exit and they don't say "Thank you". My first inclination is the say, "You're welcome! " ..... But that would be poor manners. I just let it pass......

Maybe they need to have a 21st Century Captain Kangaroo for kids to
watch on Saturday mornings - Like in the days of yore. He and Mr. Green Jeans could teach manners and common decency like they did between 1955 and 1985.

Unfortunately Captain Kangaroo and Mr Green Jeans would probably by accused of unsavory conduct in todays times. that seems to be the trend...

Yeah .... They might not be considered crude enough to garner a spot on TV. Might not be a market for common decency and manners in today's world.

I'm glad I grew up when I did .......

There is something incredibly attractive and sexy about a man with those, I will dare to say, "old school" manners like walking by the roadside when walking together, holding the door, chair, or coat... and yes even paying that drink or dinner or whatever else... yes, I am that one who will always offer either to take it on me or at least share, it's just how I am used to, and most of the times it would be accepted... obviously by being with wrong ones, apart from the last one, who was in that respect a true gentleman... Anyway, it is a bit of forbidden virtue - manners.

Not forbidden, but forgotten virtue, but I am sure you and others still understood my poor English ...
