Has anyone else noticed this? It seems you can hardly go anywhere and buy any sort of sandwich, coffee, etc. and they ask for a tip. Not verbally, but it comes up on the credit card reader. They even give you the options of 10% - 15% - 20% or higher ..... You can even customize it.

It doesn't bother me in a normal 'sit down' restaurant. If the service is good, I am happy to tip - normally 20%. If the service is so-so or even poor, I still will tip 10% to 15%. I just HATE it when they hand you a 'hand held' credit card reader and stand there and stare at you when you're filling in the tip amount and total.

Yeah, it's customary in restaurants but now too many people have their hand out. Subway sandwiches are a good example ... The person is doing their job - nothing extra that I can think of - and you're expected to tip. What about a Starbucks or similar places? You know it, they expect a tip. When do you suppose McDonalds and the fast food places are going to jump on the bandwagon?

Someone here is going to jump in and tell us they don't get paid enough by their employer and tips are the only way they can survive. My response is twofold .... First, when did society get conned into paying for other people's employees? I think tips should be in addition to a livable wage. Secondly, tips should be for going 'above and beyond' .... Not just showing up.

Fresh out of tips.

I'll assume you get tired of being expected to tip everywhere also ...

It would appear so.

I agree with you, Plzrmeister. Tipping is for doing a good job, or doing more than expected...sandwich shops, coffee shops, even Chinese take-out places, all have a tip cup set out by the register, almost guilt-tripping you into tipping. Since when is "doing your job" worthy of getting a tip?

Plzrmeister replies on 1/18/2024 6:20 am:
I'm with you 100%.

Since when is "doing your job" worthy of getting a tip?

After having tips shoved in my face ad nauseum, I've pretty much taken this approach. However, IF they give a military discount, I always give the discount back.

Is one of my biggest pet peeves. The logic behind 2 different minimum wages for tipped vs non-tipped workers put us in a place where tipping is the norm. It has now exploded into jobs that don't require tipping and it's everywhere. Unless there is a true service being provided, those tip jars get nothing from me.

Plzrmeister replies on 1/18/2024 5:31 am:
Sounds like another person tired of getting tipped to death ....

Yep - It gets old.

agree. getting out of hand. and i do feel for the service people having been one myself once upon a time.

People tire of it .... Pour someone a beer and expect a tip? Took you how long ... 20 seconds?

I think there is a strong backlash out there amongst consumers - especially when everything costs so much in the first place.

I tip at any small, privately owned, not a NATIONAL chain restaurant, pizza parlor, deli/sandwich/coffee shop IF my experiences there, whether dine in or carry-out have all been GOOD. I ALWAYS have, small businesses are the BACKBONE of our communities and I support them whenever I can, especially if they are GOOD at what they do. That doesn't mean I'm Scrooge when I'm out at "Ruth's Chris Steak House", if the service and food is commensurate with the expectations, then I will provide the APPROPRIATE tip. Had a friend that went to a McDonald's the other day, paid over $13 dollars for a Big Mac Meal with medium fries and a medium Coke and a Filet of Fish sandwich for a $1 deal they had going on. $13 DOLLARS? NOPE, NOT ME!!!! The whole concept of the FAST FOOD industry is the speed and accuracy with which you provide the 'acceptable faire' for an acceptable fare, but, what was once considered part-time, after school and summer jobs for teens and young adults is NOW full time, career jobs (do they still have the McDonald's Hamburger College?), and the underachievers DEMAND higher pay...$13 DOLLARS for a Big Mac, medium fries, a medium Coke and a Filet of Fish sandwich that was a $1 promo? $13 DOLLARS???? To para phrase the "SOUP NAZI", 'NO TIPS FOR YOU!!!'

Plzrmeister replies on 1/18/2024 8:55 am:
Uh .... Yea. $13 is pretty spendy for a Big Mac combo meal. If we go for fast food, we try to always use the coupons that come in the mail.

Under no circumstance would I ever tip at a fast food restaurant

Plzr, well said, my viewpoint as well. What irks me is a bill for $28 and you hand them a $50 bill and they look at you with a straight face and ask you "Change??"

Plzrmeister replies on 1/18/2024 9:00 am:
A $22 tip for a $28 meal? Yeah ....That's gonna happen.

Provided the service was good, that qualifies for a $6 tip in my way of looking at things. If the service was exceptional, I may go as high as $10. Now if the waiter was a lady and she was a stone cold fox ..... well .......

I agree with you, it's getting the same over here in the UK.
As you say, it's one thing in a sit down restaurant, but I don't tip in a
fast food place.

Why do we tip taxi drivers? OK, if you've got bags/suitcases & they help with them.
Or if they are picking you up from the doctors or the hospital, & you need help getting
into the car. But if they are just driving you from A to B, what have they done, other
than drive the car? Taxi drivers & fast food staff should be paid out of the price. If
the price truly doesn't cover it I would rather they put the price up to cover it.

I had what I found to be a rather odd situation in Chiago in 2007. We were in a restaurant
on Navy pier, I went to take a leak, when I'm washing my hands there's a guy there,
handing me paper towels. He had a plate there with a few coins in, obviously looking
for tips. He also had some sweets (candy) & perhaps cigarettes for sale.
I'd just got off a flight from London, I don't know if jet lag had anything to do with it,
but I seemed to need to go a few times. Seemed very odd to me to feel I needed to tip
a guy who was handing me paper towels when I used the restroom!

Plzrmeister replies on 1/19/2024 4:48 am:
I hear you loud and clear on the taxi drivers - Uber drivers too. Why would you tip them for just driving? It seems society has been programmed to feel it's customary and you're some kind of schmuck if you don't.

Want a tip for handing me a paper towel? I'd simply shake my hands really well to dry them off, as I gave him a quizzical and walked out ......

You started me on this.
Another annoying trick they play when they don't use the innocent (change?) query also irks me even more.

I'm in a coffee shop and the bill is $14.79, I hand them a twenty, and instead of being reasonable and giving me 5 singles and change they give me a five-dollar bill and 21 cents.
In this case, what do you think I left as a tip?

Oh, let's say here the server was no stone-cold fox to eliminate that very reasonable ...well...

Plzrmeister replies on 1/19/2024 5:07 am:
Yeah ... Nice try on their part. After they get left with $.21 a few times, they might think it through a little better. There are a couple of restaurants here that we go to here where you pay 'up front'..... Golden Corral & Sizzler and they always ask if you need cash for tips. I actually appreciate that, yet I always answer, "Yes, I need five $1 bills."

If you didn't know, Golden Corral is a buffet, so all a server does is bring you a glass of water and haul off your dirty plates. At Sizzler, all I do is the salad bar, so it's again a matter of getting a glass of water and the plates taken away. The servers don't have to spend much time on me/us at all, so I generally go $2 per person.

It's actually funny or odd though that a few years back there was a Baskins Robbins ice cream store here we'd go to occasionally. I'm a credit card person - I never carry cash. When I'd pay, I always wanted to leave at least a $1 tip, but their credit card machine didn't give you that option. I'd always mention to the server that they needed to talk to the owner about it because I wasn't able to leave a tip and I bet a lot of people were in the same boat as I was.

I remember. 99% of the time, the servers looked like high school kids - or in that age range - and I wanted to give them some extra spending money. Besides, I'd always say, "I want an industrial strength large scoop of chocolate peanut butter" and they'd always laugh and give me a big scoop. That needed rewarded.

I worked as a server for a few summers at a busy restaurant. Sometimes, customers had to wait for up to an hour to get a table. I believe that being a server is one of the hardest jobs out there, and you can only understand it if you have done it yourself.

However, there are some poor servers out there who do not meet the standards. Servers earn less than five dollars an hour in most places and mainly rely on tips to make a living. The cup in the photo is for tips if someone makes you a coffee, cappuccino, or any other beverage.

I haven't even mentioned the customers yet. They can be very challenging to deal with sometimes. But you sound like a good customer, someone I would enjoy serving. There are great people out there who leave generous tips, sometimes as much as $100. On the other hand, some people leave just a dollar, irrespective of how good or bad the service is.

The restaurant business is tough, but it can be a great place to make a good living.

Yes, we know, but it was the only photo we had regarding 'tips'.
You make very good points! I still ask .... When did society get conned into paying a business's employees? Servers should be paid a livable wage, just as people in any other business are. Tips should complement their income, not comprise it.

Yeah, I'm sure some customers are a pain in the ass. So is climbing into a house's crawl space to work on a plumbing leak, or going up into an attic when it's 130 degrees up there to work on an electrical problem. A lot of jobs come with unpleasantries. Suppose anyone has ever tipped a plumber or an electrician? One day every person who provides a service might be expected to be tipped ... Ouch. OK - I'll jump down off my bandwagon now.

I had to reply to your reply.

I always tip people I feel have gone above and beyond. For instance, the triple-A driver that changed my tire. I gave him a twenty. It was Christmas time and freezing. I guess to each his own.

Plzrmeister replies on 1/19/2024 6:17 am:
Couldn't agree more .... If someone goes 'above and beyond', regardless of their occupation, I'd give them some extra cash. The last guy who shampooed the carpets got a $10 tip, without putting his hand out. I offered cash to the last guy who jump started my car battery that had gone dead in a parking lot ... He turned it down ..... As have I turned down cash when I've been offered it for just being a decent human being.

Perhaps we can agree there is a difference between going 'above and beyond' and merely doing one's job? There are a lot of people in every occupation on Earth who go 'all out' and never get nor expect a tip. Their employers pay them rather than expect you and me to.
