Be it in the blogs or in people's profiles, I cringe a lot of the time when I'm reading what people have written. Naturally there are the fake profiles that scream out at anyone with a grasp of the English language. I just love the ones that start out with "Am...". They generally get worse from there./COLOR]

I was fortunate to get a good high school and college education, so I notice most of the time when our language gets butchered or there are grammatical errors made. Trust me - I am FAR from perfect - and when I have a question on word usage or spelling, I'll go to Google and do the research. I also go there to find definitions when somebody here has used what I call at 25 cent word.

I hear ya. There are some writers who are really eloquent and their blogs & profiles are easy to read and they have a natural flow to them. Others are ..... well .... Let's just say they kind of make my eyes hurt some of the time. I suppose it goes with the territory. They get their point across and many would say that's good enough. Who am I to argue with that?

With the advent of AI, I wonder how long it will be before people utilize AI for profiles and blogging. It might be happening right now for all I Know. Right now there is 'spell check' to help people out ( Yours truly a lot )
and I can see a 'grammatical check' in the near future. If it can help people with 'your' vs 'you're' I''ll be a happy camper.

"Let's just say they kind of make my eyes hurt some of the time"

Oh my yes! Some text I cannot even get through, especially poor grammar with no punctuation or at least reasonable punctuation. Having to try to figure out where sentences/thoughts end... way too much to ask sometimes. Add they're, their & there to the your/you're list.

I try as well, though sometimes, eh... things happen. This is aside from the times the Alt-bots erase random letters from text. There are days when my thoughts run faster than my fingers, but ultimately I try to be coherent and eloquent. But then, I like the written form of expression. Some days I reread things I have written and think what. the. hell.

Ars longa, vita brevis - Art is long, life is short

Plzrmeister replies on 2/18/2024 5:44 am:
We must be related. I forgot to mention punctuation and how some people can ramble on forever without using a comma or period. I think I was a little hesitant to because I didn't want to 'trigger' anyone and have them go on a rant about being a grammar Nazi.

I periodically run into a lady on the IM ( Rare ) with what I call G-2 ... Intelligence ... I generally mention it's a pleasure to have run into someone who can spell, punctuate and form a complete sentence. You're right .... Their, there and they're are ones that I notice confused too often.

It is easy to complain about writing
in blogs an comments when your
first language is English. Alt is an
international web site an many of the
people in other countries don't have
your american education. I think the
content of their contribution to the blogs
is much more important, than their finesse,
or lack of, with the English language.
Frankly, the random editing, denial of comments
on blogs is a bigger problem. Plus the fact
that non-members can come on Alt, post
outrageous blogs and then block members
from commenting.
Do you think, at least, AI will be grammatically
correct?

Plzrmeister replies on 2/18/2024 8:44 am:
One would certainly think/hope AI would be grammatically correct.

Time will tell ..... I'm sure it's coming.

I converse with an English professor so I make damn sure I'm on my best writing and speaking behavior.

I'm probably guilty of the mistakes you've covered here.

I enjoy the blogs and when I comment, I try to express the first thing that comes to mind. If I have to overthink about it I lose any interest.

I posted about 12 or so of my blogs a couple of years ago, but I found I don't enjoy writing all that much.
I see you have gotten quite prolific lately and have a writing style and content with definite staying power. Well done.

Those are kind words .... I appreciate them!

I'm with you on any blog I have to think very much about. I consider them as a tad too 'deep' for my blood. If I can't readily come up with a smart assed answer, I generally don't comment at all.

English is not my first language and I am aware that sometimes I probably sound... let's just say funny to all of you native speakers... but then.. we have talked for a few years now... so you do understand me, and I understand you, and maybe that is what counts... I will never be as proficient as you or other bloggers are, but I try to be as good as I can...

Plzrmeister replies on 2/18/2024 9:00 am:
You write remarkably well for someone with English as a second language! In fact you write better than a lot of people with English as their only language.

Ain't that the truth!! You don't take a back seat to anyone here in the blogs.

Please, don't think that native speakers of English knows the grammar well. They don't dspite of they should have been educated better than a foreigner.
A lot of times "am" or "l am" as a first word of a sentence is produced by native English speakers.

Artificial intelligence does not necessarily knows grammar. Easy to decode which text is written by people and which is by machine. But this is language-dependent. Hungarian grammar cannot be produced by a robot or a spellchecker.

Plzrmeister replies on 2/18/2024 2:33 pm:
Starting a sentence with "I am" is pretty much perfect English in my book. How many people have you ever heard in real life start a sentence with "am" unless it's asking a question .... "Am I nuts?" If it's common in your circle of acquaintances, so be it.

I'm not well versed in AI but I'd think it would be good with grammar - Who knows. If it's not now, it might become so as time marches on.

i still have my High School grammar book and scan it from time to time. i probably should do that more often!

When I'm puzzled, I do the Google thing. As much as I try, I have a hard time of remembering when to use who vs whom.

I get hung up on that one too. You'd think as often as I look it up that I could remember it but nooooooooooooo.

Haha, no artificial translator wants to understand what I mean! "You" as a person or "you" as a crowd, it doesn't matter, it says "you" and that means YOU!
I have to rephrase whole sentences until I get a satisfactory result🤣I say "you" ( plural,
the Reps) and he means you as a person!
Funny,tragic,misunderstanding.....But if AI can "read" my mind and manipulate it we will soon be in times of the
"Terminator"!
Yes, why did I start learning a foreign language at my age? And without these "aids" (cassette, CD, Ap)?
"learning by doing" and encountering harsh critics.....but stay curious!
Is AI a blessing? I'm thinking of chemistry and physics! Millions of reaction possibilities! Now AI is coming and will control EVERYTHING, depending on your wishes and desires!
We have learned as children in kindergarten the 1 times 1 with the slide rule, the next generations (if they will exist) will think in 1s and 0s, have to think, or be controlled, sad!
OK, I've turned off.
Originality of a language, including my language....Turks will never learn German! Germans DO NOT WANT TO SPEAK TURKISH!

AI grammatically correct?

It may well be, but it tells lies.

I used ebays AI tool to discribe an item before Christmas as an experiment.
I felt I had to edit it, when it was going on about the great quality.
It was a cheap Santa suit, that I had won in a raffle.

Apart from that, it appeared to me to be well writen, but I didn't feel I could
leave in all the BS about the quality.

Plzrmeister replies on 2/19/2024 4:50 am:
I think this illustrates my thought that AI is a helpful tool and not an end in and of itself.

I agree .... AI needs to be combined with HI - Human Intelligence. They compliment one another.

Well I can say with GREAT certainty that Alt's 'Censors' don't know the first thing about grammer or MOST anything else, and here's an example of what I mean 'LOVE your two beach photos...the wider top photo is very dramatic, showing the width of the horizon and the clouds with the Sun and it's bright light shining through, and the second photo HONES in on the Sun and it's BRILLIANCE in the sky, the clouds and reflections on the ocean! NICELY captured, Kathryn!!!
Don't you just get GIDDY with delight when you FIND 'lost' money? Of course, it wasn't really lost, or did you wonder where it was before finding it in the pocket of those jeans? Enjoy your lunch!!!' and it was BANNED for improper content...

Plzrmeister replies on 2/19/2024 4:57 am:
ALT has a knack for making one scratch their head in wonder on many occasions. I know other people have run into the same thing you have as far as censoring goes. It can be frustrating.

I tried many times to have this as a 'signature' in the blogs - it's a funny variation to a common bumper sticker..... "How's my driving? Call 1-800-EAT-SH*T"...... Of course I used an 'I' instead of an '*'. It got censored every attempt. I used the * here in my response because I didn't want it to get censored too.

Ex, I've read a lot of your posts, even going back several pages to read some from before I joined the Site, and if you hadn't mentioned where you're from/live in previous posts and reiterated today that English is not your first language, I'd have never known. You communicate VERY well in English on here, making it VERY easy for the 'native speakers' to understand what you're saying, VERY PROFICIENTLY! 'Methinks the lady doth protest too much’!! You're a natural, and FAR better than 'most native speakers' that have had the English language thrown at them their entire lives! 'Chin up, PRETTY lady, you've nothing to feel insecure(?) about when it comes to the English language!

Plzrmeister replies on 2/19/2024 5:00 am:
I couldn't agree more .... Ex is incredibly proficient with the English language.

As we've both noted now, far better than many with English as their first or only language.

@Plzrmeister and @1benquick, you are very kind and I am very grateful for your appreciation of my knowledge of the English language... It means a lot for a non-native speaker. Thank you very much, dear friends.

I absolutely love writing! Though, I must admit, sometimes I struggle with spelling. But, that doesn't stop me from journaling every day.

My best advice for anyone who wants to become a better writer is to read, read, read! You can learn so much by reading anything and everything -- from trashy novels to classic literature, good and bad writing. It's just like a carpenter who watches and learns from a master. So, go ahead and read as much as you can. You'll naturally absorb all kinds of knowledge.

And when you're ready, start writing! Don't be afraid to try new things and experiment. If you're unsure about your writing, that's okay. Just keep at it and don't hesitate to throw out what doesn't work. Trust me, you'll get there!

My 'spell check' gets a pretty good workout whenever I pound away at this keyboard. I too enjoy writing and endeavor to get better and better at it over time.

I'm not much for reading books - I know I should - but I read a lot of articles of one kind or another on the internet. You read 'trashy' novels? I'm shocked!
