I don't want to get into some deep analytical discussion of the art of listening, but I think we'd all agree it's pretty important - Right? I know we've all seen a million comments about the importance of 'communication' and listening is an integral part of that.

Well, duh! I'd want to add in you also need to comprehend what it is you're listening to. If words go in one ear and out the other, you can be a great listener to no avail.

I remember reading somewhere about how men and women differ on 'listening'. If I remember right, women like for men to merely listen when they have a problem or situation they need to discuss ... They just want your ear. On the other hand, men are essentially 'problem solvers' so when women bring up a problem/situation, men go to work on fixing it or finding a solution. Not what the ladies want guys ......

There's a certain amount of truth to that I suppose. The deep thinkers on here might want to analyze that concept and set the record straight... I always love that! In any event, we all need to be good listeners and good comprehenders in our relationships and day to day life. Many times what a person is saying isn't what they're really meaning. Listen well.....

Most people hear you but very few really listen and comprehend.

That's undoubtedly very true ... Especially the comprehending part.

A lot depends on the speaker too .... You have to make sure you're getting your point or concern across. Don't just assume the other person 'gets' what you're saying.

There are three types of listeners;
The kind that listen with the intent
to understand, the type that listens
with an intent to reply and the ones
that already have their opinion an
they're sticking to it.

I suppose that's one way of looking at it....

It's always good to get clarification on these things.

I agree, now ya got me thinking about those who talk to hear themselves talk.

Not the most productive conversation. imho

Plzrmeister replies on 3/29/2024 8:21 am:
Yeah .... There never seems to be a shortage of people who enjoy listening to themselves blabber on and on .....

Through the years, I've learned I learn more with my eyes and ears than I do with my mouth.
