In the Socratic dialogue 'Republic', Plato famously wrote: “our need will be the real creator”, which was molded over time into the English proverb 'Necessity is the mother of invention'. I'm sure we've all heard that before - Right? When you need something, you figure out a way to achieve or attain it. Raise your hand if you've ever 'Jerry Rigged' something .... I think these concepts go hand in hand.

I think my middle name is 'Jerry Rigged'. I'm fairly proficient at problem solving using the Jerry Rig technique. If you've got a problem or need something, you either come up with a solution or you throw in the towel .... My towel stays with me, thank you very much.

The meme would indicate someone did some inventing that also included some Jerry Rigging. I'm not a beer drinker - Do they even use those plastic units for six packs any more? If memory serves, didn't they get rid of them for environmental concerns? I don't think they did any good for wildlife either.

I'm not sure - The peanut gallery will have to tune us in. If they're no longer in use, I can think of many ways to secure hands and/or feet to a bed that doesn't include spending a lot of money. That's half the fun of BDSM .... Utilizing what you already have around the house - Especially in the kitchen!

I'm not sure if those plastic thingies are used in a 6-pack of beer, but they're still used on carbonated beverages - either cans or bottles.

Another popular term for "making do with what you have" is to "McGyver" something, as in "I didn't have the right screw, so I had to McGyver it". The term is from the TV show of the same name.

They're still being used?? I haven't seen one for as long as I can remember. Hmmmmm .....

Yeah, I remember McGyver and all the Jerry Rigging he did. I think the term Jerry Rigging has much nicer ring to it.

I have duct tape......that's the Mother of Invention and Jerry Rigging

Plzrmeister replies on 4/8/2024 5:52 am:
And on the third day, God invented duct tape. Thank you God!

Right? Who among us hasn't used some duct tape for some serious Jerry Rigging?

Jerry must have been quite the guy!

When I was a kid, I always thought it had something to do with Germans. I read 'Sgt Rock' comic books and they always referred to Germans as 'Jerrys'.

Jerry was a nickname given to Germans mostly during the Second World War by soldiers and civilians of the Allied nations, in particular by the British. The nickname was originally created during World War I. The term is the basis for the name of the jerrycan. The name may simply be an alteration of the word German.

Yes they are still in use. I cut them up before recycling

Plzrmeister replies on 4/8/2024 8:39 am:
Yes, I used to cut them up too to protect wildlife when I wound up with any. Good for you!

I'm gonna have to keep my eyes peeled now to see if I ever spot any.
