My money says there are some Chess players out there in the peanut gallery. Although I have played a few times in the past, I've never been an avid Chess player and I couldn't even tell you how each piece is allowed to move. I 'think' I know what the various pieces are called though. I know it's a game of great skill and takes some serious brain power to be good at. Brain power? Perhaps we've discovered your aversion to Chess. I'm in the same boat though - Chess isn't my game. I haven't played any board games for many moons with the exception of 'Pente' which is an excellent game if any of you out there enjoy board games .... It's a game of skill and brain power too. I remember the name Bobby Fischer from out of the past. If I'm not mistaken, he was the 'King of the Hill' in Chess long ago. Seems he was in competition with a Russian Chess guru for being the best in the world. I sort of remember something to that effect ... Peanut gallery - Help me out here. That certainly rings a bell, although I'm too lazy to Oogle it for the specifics. If I take anything from Chess, it's the term 'Checkmate'. Is there anyone among us who doesn't understand that term? I love that word and utilize it in many different situations in life. I also like the phrase which is something along the lines of "He was playing Checkers and they were playing Chess". I think the name you're looking for is "Kasparov", I think. I like playing chess, but I'm not so deep into it that I understand a move like "queen's bishop to knight 4". But I do have a handle on the different moves of all the pieces.

I've played chess but trying to think 4 or 5 moves ahead just didn't interest me. Maybe I should give it another try.........

I enjoy the word "checkmate" too. It has the effect of verbally slapping your opponent in the face. I can play chess, but I prefer backgammon because the games are shorter and the doubling cube adds a nice gambling opportunity. My sister has recently become interested in backgammon, and every time I visit her, she challenges me to a game. Unfortunately for her, she has not yet acquired the nuances of the game and never wins. In backgammon, there's a point in a game where mathematically you can offer your opponent a false chance whereby they can roll two die to your one each turn. It has the power of "checkmate", but your opponent feels more frustration and pain as they slowly watch you win with seemingly less effort. In some cases, when the match is more unbalanced, you can even skip your roll and allow them to roll again to increase their false hope. I can be quite the sh.t when playing games.
