(attempted) hit and run

Last night I went for my walk later than usual. A difference of only one hour can mean the difference between a nearly silent walk and one that is filled with the hustle and bustle of a city that is waking and going work. There were definitely more cars the road, but one in particular caught my attention because not only was it bumping loud bass at 3am, I kept seeing it. Whoever was driving the car was obviously cruising around looking for something, but the neighborhood I was in didn’t suggest drugs. I was surrounded by houses with well-maintained yards, and the vehicles parked in the driveways were pretty typical of working class stiffs. Maybe the driver was hoping find a female, I couldn’t say, I just know that for a 20 minute period I heard and saw the same vehicle multiple times.

I’ll admit I was pretty irritated with the fact that my nightly moment of Zen was being ruined, but eventually the car seemed disappear for good. Time passed and the night was once again quiet and still. My feet started ache so I decided head home, and I was no less than a block away from the house when the damn sound of bass coming from the car I’d been seeing suddenly flared behind . I turned around and there, across the street and the block a bit, was the same asshole I’d seen many times earlier. The car was parked the corner with stereo blaring, and the driver was standing next it with the drivers side door open. I don’t know what my intentions were exactly, but I began stride across the street towards the vehicle. The driver uttered something incomprehensible at me, and when I did not respond he suddenly leapt into the car, threw it in drive and without even closing his door began to accelerate rapidly towards me.

There was a brief moment when I worried I might not be able to get out of the way, but once the car sped past me I whirled around and made sure to get the license plate number. As I repeated it out loud to myself I watched the car continue driving down the street, and it took me a moment to decide whether or not I wanted to call the police. It seemed like the decent thing to do - to inform them some shady character was cruising around town, and once confronted was willing to run a person down to get away. Am I making it sound too dramatic? The guy did cross the lane he should have been turning into, and one of those middle of the road turn lanes as well, to come at me. It was no accident, and there is NO doubt that he saw me. He spoke to me, so I know he was aware of my presence. For some reason I think the fact that I did not respond is what worried him. Again, I can only speculate.

I didn’t call 9-1-1 just non-emergency. While I was on the phone giving information a cruiser appeared a few blocks away, joined moments later by a second. One of them came and took down information from me, then they thanked me and drove away. There’s no telling if anything will come of this but I guess I did my civic duty for the month. Maybe the guy was just driving around looking for some pussy, or perhaps it was drugs. I would have been okay with that, but when it looks like you tried to run me over in the street, I take it personally.

Idk..that sounds scary AF to me.
I am glad you called on him. He sounds as if he were testing you, testing the situation..and if he'd crossed paths with a lesser assertive person...something bad could have happened.
Again glad your safe.
