Breo (2) - watching, learning, mimicking

It’s pretty clear that Breo was a runt, but he is bouncing back rather nicely. A bit of the cold / flu lingers in his nose, and he is still scratching a tiny bit, but I feel he is making magnificent progress. Without feeding him too much, I have been trying to make sure he puts on a tiny bit of weight. It doesn’t appear to be working.

He is very attentive and watchful, and I think if I had specific things I really wanted to teach or train, he’d take to them really quickly. For now, I just want him to know that he is safe and loved, and maybe establish a bit of a routine. He still needs to find his place in the larger scheme of things, since we’ve begun encouraging him to venture into the rest of the house. He has two adult cats to win over, or avoid, and though the former might be a huge challenge we’re rooting for it over the latter. I’ve begun leaving my door open most of the time now, which means he is free to roam, and he has taken to doing so discreetly.

One thing that surprised and delighted me are his cleanliness and bathroom etiquette. The boy knows how to cover his urine and feces, which is refreshing since the box is in the office that is attached to my bedroom. The two adult cats in the house are lazy or mentally off because the odds of them covering their potty is nearly nil. Breo is so on it that I you not when I tell you that he watches me intently when I scoop his box and put the clumps in a different, sealable container. He wants to know what the heck I am doing and I’m sure it’s confusing for him, but at least he remains a master at helping me keep things smelling halfway decent in our living space.

For whatever reason, I like to give cats kisses. One adult cat in our home will tolerate it, one would try to scratch my face off but she doesn’t have any front claws, so I am forcing them upon Breo. He was fascinated with my lips and mouth, of course, and as time has passed I believe I have received more than one kitty kiss from him. He just pushes his nose against my face but it feels like a mimic and I’m going to believe it whether it’s the truth or not. Don’t disabuse my fantasy connection with my kitty! He also mimics my hand on his face, I believe. Many times he has gently reached up and pushed at my nose, and I’m convinced he’s giving me reciprocal face loving that I’ve given to him. And I’ll believe it until he claws my eyes out because he’s really just been playing, testing the waters, waiting to attack…

There are toys and tricks I know of that I can devise to keep Breo busy, and at times I do need to be free to accomplish some work or go to the grocery store, but for the most part he gets regular, direct stimulation from me every day. It’s not just a few minutes, it is sometimes an hour, several times throughout the day. He’ll have to be weened from this just like he’ll have to be weened from the wet food I’ve been feeding him, but make no mistake, I do not intend on ignoring or neglecting the little butt nugget. He’s too cute and my heart is way too soft.

Sleeping arrangements continue to shift and morph, but he’s getting more comfortable, and as you can see, he found his way to my bed to snuggle up with me.

It was a rare exception though; just getting him to come into my room continues to be a bit of a challenge. Even if he’s not ducking into the closet for safety he still likes to remain mostly in that area throughout the day. Little steps for tiny cats.
