the Christmas spirit

I know, I know; it’s New Year’s Eve, not Christmas Eve, so what the hell am I posting this for now? No explanation, just read it if you want .

If you were say a few things about what the Christmas spirit is, specifically, you might mention being more charitable, or nicer and more forgiving family, things of that nature. The Christmas spirit is supposed be buoyant, jolly, celebratory, kind, giving, selfless. I’m definitely not the first to ask this, but why does that have to be a Christmas-specific thing? Is there a reason why we can’t be more charitable, nicer and forgiving year-round? If you find the Christmas spirit difficult to sustain, maybe that says a little something about you, or society in general.

The vast majority of normal, average folk were fairly broke this year because of the pandemic. For those whom the acquisition of “things” is what the holidays are about, it was probably a lame Christmas indeed. For some, being forced to forgo the larger family gatherings might have been difficult, but maybe stress levels were a bit lower this season as a result. I don’t know you, or your family dynamic, but the cliches that go with family during the holidays weren’t created out of thin air. Sometimes, despite our best intentions and efforts, it really is just best to stay home with your immediate loved ones and celebrate the season for the opportunity it provides for us to simply be together, and not have to worry about waking the next day go work, back school, back the daily life of responsibilities and stress. Maybe for many of us, this holiday season was a blessing in disguise for these seemingly anti-Christmas reasons, and made us realize what goodwill toward men and that should really be about.

I don’t hold very high hopes, but perhaps for the holidays 2021 we can skip the crass commercialization and over-consumption that typically goes with Christmas and just stick the good cheer and loving wonderful fuzzy feelings thing that it’s kind of supposed be about. Not only that, but let’s go further and just make every day Christmas day in that regard. Peace on Earth and goodwill toward your fellow human should not be something we only work on for roughly two months because it’s “that time of the year”. Let’s make every day that time of the year.
