unfamiliar territory - more misophonia files

During the drive to Sutherlin I felt like I was in an immersion or float tank. It was not only quiet inside my car, but everywhere I went. Not once during the 3+ hours did I encounter overly loud, modified mufflers or booming stereo systems from passing vehicles, just normal engine noises from people not desperate to draw attention to themselves. Twice I sat in gas station parking lots with my car door ajar, just enjoying a brief respite from driving, and during that time did not get angry or even irritated at noises that would have otherwise plagued me in the city I live in. It was bliss.

My friend in Sutherlin lives in a traditional apartment complex, with neighbors on either side of him, above him, etc. It’s the kind of living situation I know I could never be happy in, unless I guess the complex was super high quality, because I’ve yet to be in an apartment where I didn’t hear the people upstairs walking across their floor (I should say thumping across) or coughing and laughing through the walls all around me. People pay how much rent to live that way? Unfortunately his place was no exception. It wasn’t a miserable experience, that one night on the couch, but it did remind me of what it’s like to live that way. I wound up outside on the back patio, near a rather loud but consistent water fountain, using it for white noise. I actually sat there for a while, no headphones on, and didn’t have to deal with screeching birds, barking dogs or heavy traffic. Sure there was the occasional disruption to the general peace and quiet, but NOTHING like Woodburn. It felt magnificent and now I want more!

My sleep was occasionally interrupted by some friendly and curious cats, but otherwise I did fairly well in unfamiliar territory. Usually when I try to sleep in a new environment my senses stay a bit too alert, and I wake up easily, but I did pretty well that night. No fan whirred in the room to give me white noise, and I didn’t put in earplugs, so I think pure exhaustion was the key. What the trip proved to me is that I can and likely will function on a much better level once I am away from my current living situation. I slept better, felt better and can’t wait to test the theory further. A little peace and quiet is good for the soul!
