This the start of carnaval here in Holland, only in the South of Holland, were there live a lot of Roman Catholics.
Fools day., it is, too...

It is also a festive day, going from door to door, singing some songs about some very old Saint, who did cut his cape in half to give to the poor, long, long time ago.

Now they are singing and most did make a little latern at school, and sing.
It is the intention, that you give them sweets

You can compare it a bit with your Halloween, only we have a very thin layer of Sainthood, about the greed,
of , to collect even more candy, then they have in their homes already!!

But, that is just my view, i buy sweets, anyway, to give to the few who come by my door.
I think the word did go around, that you can take as many sweets, as you can get, in one hand, when you sing at my door!
I always have a bunch of singing at my door.

I always give those , compliments about the laterns they made, some are really nice!
So, being around 21: 00 houres, i dont think there will be anymore around.

I have some leftover candy!!! chocolate!!! :
Ayurvedic wise, it is not good for me, to eat chocoate.....
Ssstttt!!!

Untill next year!

I still can remember the excitement when we, as kids walked around singing and collection candy!
Sometimes people gave you money too!
We were poor, so money was a real treat!

or they gave you tangerine, that really sucked!
we wanted candy!! LOL
And some people never opened their doors, so we had a special nasty song for them!
Something to do, with frog legs... dont ask!

Is this how you celebrate Armistice Day in the Netherlands?

Here in the UK on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour we have a two minute silence to remember those who died in the great war. That was the war that was men't to end all wars. Since them somewhere in the world people have been fighting war everyday since.

The Netherlands was not involved in the First World War, so they are generally not aware of Armistice Day being observed in other parts of the world. Their Remembrance Day is on May 4th.
As someone who originally came from the south of Holland, it always struck me as incongruous to have such opposites on the same day.
For me it will be Remembrance Day, as it is called here in Canada.

As far back as history has recorded there has always been wars.....nothing will ever change....there will always be wars.

The Merry Minuet

they're rioting in africa
they're starving in spain
there's hurricanes in florida
and texas needs rain

the whole world is festering with unhappy souls
the french hate the germans the germans hate the poles
Italians hate Yugoslavs, South Africans hate the Dutch
And i don't like anybody very much
But we can be thankful and tranquil and proud
That Man's been endowed with the mushroom shaped cloud
And we know for certain that some lovely day
Some one will set the spark off and we will all be blown away

They're rioting in Africa
There's strife in Iran
What nature doesn't do to us
Will be done by our fellow man!

I luvd Halloween as kid going out w all my friends...we’d sneak out after everybody was asleep & rolled houses & the trees w toilet paper to the mean folks! lol
it’s Veterans Day for us here in America honoring the service men & women in our armed forces & those that gave the ultimate sacrifice!
operation market garden was a WW2 mission to go thru Holland into Germany & end the war earlier...it failed miserably but a lot of good movies tell of it!
