Bike repair,

In my traveling, it is necessary to be able to repair my bike on my own.

So, i asked around by some bike repair shops.
Offering my services, for free, so i can learn to repair the most common little problems.

Nobody wanted me around in their repair shop, maybe they thought it is too much work...?
I dont know.

So, i remembered this Salvation Army bicycle repair shop.
You can buy second hand bikes, real cheap there!

Went to that shop, told my story, explained my plan and they welcomed me, to come learn with them.
Today was my first day, i learned alot allready.

They even serve a meal, at lunch time, i was totally surprised by that.
It is nothing too fancy, just very simple food.

The first time i went there, there was this one man, looking at me, and shouting; i am not crazy!
i looked at him, and told him, everyone is crazy!
He liked my reaction, went away laughing.

They have a homeless shelter, there too.
Helping people get back on their feet, finding their way back into society.

it was like i only needed to be remembered how and what to do.
Because it was very easy, the first things to do....

Once, a lifetime ago, i gave bike repair lessons.

So, somewhere, in my brain and hands, the knowledge is still there.
Only need to be remembered...
cell remembrance....?

rosa

I love how you find solutions

It is wonderful how you calmed the man

Too bad I didn't live closer..

I slaved away at toy r us for 7 yr building tons of stuff..esp the bikes..

I could have taught you alot..

The problem with most bike shops is they sell 3000 dollar bikes..
Which usually are fined tuned..

I'm not saying it's rocket science...a bike is a bike..I could have fine tuned one..

But alot of people don't want a noob around their expensive merch

Baack in the day one could buy a small kit of tire repair patches, different sizes, which were easy to use. I wonder if they still do... and a small air pump... was so easy to fix flats,

Well done, Rosa - a great thing to think of, and a worthy cause too ......... sounds like the sort of place I'd enjoy working at.

likematures,
Yes, most bikes nowadays, are very high tech.
People dont know anymore how to repair their own bike, or are not interested in learning that.... ?
or are just down right lazy and pay to let someone else do the job for them.

Mine is not high tech at all. Just very sturdy dutch design, is all i need.

likeithot,

I know those boxes, kits, i have one.
For things like a broken spoke or any other technical incident, i need more tools to fix that.
And first, learn how to.

I learned that, already..

i know how to fix a flat tire, or replace that tire...

brandy,
Thank you,

I wont be in big cities, most of the times, so to learn to fix most technical malfunction, is absolutely a must.

davina,
Thank you!
It is a sort of, social workshop, with all kind of people with a history, so to say....
most are on medication.....
Very varied group of people.....
Everyone has his own 'handicap', be it physical or mental.....

There is no competition, no pressure to have to finish at a certain time frame.

This one man, did own a shop, got in problems, got in jail, and now is working on repairing bikes...

They all have a story to tell.... damaged good......

I think, during the coming weeks they will, almost all, open up, to tell their story...

( they think, i am "normal") whahahah!! Little do they know!
