Whats the difference between a slave and a submissive?

All of the definitions below are actually what I've heard from people or read in various books or websites. Some of them are entirely applicable to the way a particular person lives and functions and perceives themselves as either a slave or a submissive. Some of it is pure bullshit

Perhaps we could further ask what a submissive and a slave have in common. Both have a deep need/desire to at least partially submit/give up/give up to a dominant. They "need" this most of the time because an essential part of a submissive/slave's fulfillment and satisfaction is to please and/or offer services to a dominant who has earned their trust, respect, and (generally) love.

Following "commonality" to its natural end, a submissive and a slave are truly equal except to the extent to which they submit. A slave surrenders more of himself (all of himself?) to his owner.
Even if a person agrees in every way possible to "be" a slave, there is no court all over most countries on this earth that recognizes slavery, consensual or not, as a valid status. If that slave decides to stop being a slave, there is no legal remedy to compel him to return to that state, even if he has signed a dozen notarized documents and branded his owner's name on his butt. If leaving is an option, is it really "slavery"? What we call slavery in lifestyle is a carefully crafted and nurtured fantasy, albeit driven and coerced by very real needs and lived 24/7 in very extreme states of control and obedience.
But is slavery really just a fantasy? Tell me the difference between a slave and a submissive.

Starting by telling you what others might say or have said:
:
A submissive accepts submission while a slave accepts obedience.
A submissive is possessed but a slave is owned.
A submissive has a safe word to end the game while a slave has agreed to non-consent.
A submissive has more self-respect than a slave. Slaves are crazy, because who in their right mind would want to be a slave?
A sub is free. A slave is unfree.
A slave is not allowed to sit on furniture or wear clothes, and always kneels at his/her owner’s feet.

I think, a submissive surrenders while a slave tends to obey and endure insults.
