Where I lived a child they told me to stand still or pretend to be dead if confronted by a bear. Bear attacks were rare (bears themselves not so much) and usually occurred during spring when they woke up hungry and grumpy from their long sleep or when a mother bear wanted to indeed protect her cubs. There have also been a few cases when a bear has attacked a person running in the woods so no, running isn’t a good idea (neither is necessarily climbing a tree in an attempt to escape them). Are you waiting for something to come by?
