Putting Affairs in Order

I wish I were referring to systematically organizing the many affairs I have had - virtual and real life - but, no, as much fun as that would (and as quick a project, alas), I am referring to the grimmer connotation of the phrase.

There comes a time when we have to do this: wills, executors, physicians' directives, etc. even if there doesn't seem to be a imminent need to do so. But, at an age, and I am at that age, there is always always an imminent need to do this. Because while we never know how long we have to live, we understand that the older we get the less time there is. I am 74. My parents lived into their 80s. There is no reason to think I won't as well. But why not be prepared (rhetorical).

And, so, I have put my affairs in order. The special people in my life know all there is to know in order to carry on after I am gone. It saddens me to think of this - as I am sure it did my folks and my first wife - and yet it is such a kind thing to do for them. I think I find some small comfort that the last thing the people I love might appreciate about me is this act of kindness. Well, I hope so.

Sorry for such a grim beginning to the day.

Insomnia - Poor sleep

I used to be a great sleeper - to bed at 10pm and up at 6am - 8 hours of deep, restful sleep. But something has changed and now I rarely if ever have such nights and that is even with he help of a sleeping tablet. What does one do in the middle of the night, awake and restless? A default is to watch something familiar on television and hope that it will lull me to sleep; another is to read something that is sufficiently dense that the effort of trying to concentrate will knock me out - Will and Ariel Durant's History of Philosophy used to do this for me; or, maybe, a snack of some kind; and there is always the obvious standby for this group of logging on to Alt and scanning for messages or comments on my writings (there are rarely any so this doesn't take long) or doing some new writing (which is often what I do). At some point, my little eyes get heavy and I retreat to the couch and et voila I am asleep for a little while longer. But when I wake again I am not rested or refreshed and am in a funk for the rest of the day.

I know - who cares? But I warned you - writing is a way I segue back to sleep. Forewarned is forearmed, right?

Yawn. Once more unto the couch, dear friends.

Glad to see that the practice of borrowing (stealing) photos and using them on Alt hasn't changed. This is one of those, If I can run a quick search on the picture, why can't Alt as part of their authentication process? (Rhetorical)

Just One of Those Meh Days

We've all had them, right? You wake up and are just meh - and you aren't able to shake it. That's my day today. I woke up feeling meh - had my morning coffee and donut - usually a morning brightener - today, meh - and then I decamped to the couch where I encamped and have been slug-a-bed (slug-a-couch) every since. Ah, lucky Altizens that I have this forum to share such nonsense. Oh, well. As the redoubtable Scarlett O'Hara eloquently put it - "Tomorrow is another day."

Room Ownership - How Often Should I (or you) Be There?

I have a room - well, a couple of them. These are not really play rooms - one is for me to post writings and the other is to talk about music. People are invited to drop in and chat and contribute or just hang out - there are no expectations beyond polite behavior.

Now, does it matter how often I am in these rooms? I mean, if I were there more, if people saw the room(s) were occupied, would that encourage more people to visit? I have no idea.

This is true of other rooms, too. The owner is not present very often and/or at unpredictable times. Does this matter? Or does the room draw people based primarily on their shared interest in what the room offers?

As for me, on those days when I am able to do so, I will perch myself in my rooms. If someone stops by, great; if not, well, that is quite okay too.

On Aging - Sort Of

This year I am celebrating the birthdays of two friends who are *80*, one who is *70*, another who is *50*, and two couples' *50th* wedding anniversaries. It doesn't seem possible. And, yet, here we are, older in some ways; still young in others. And to those enjoying milestone events - that end in d'oh or any other number - I wish you the best - health, happiness, laughter, love - and will try to do the same as my calendar pages turn to similar celebrations.

So, you found a room and liked it and joined. And then what? Did you post to the message board? Join a chat session (or several) and post your presence and a greeting to others who might be there? Return consistently? I hope so. Because that is the (a) key to the community remaining vibrant and alive.

This may be a "pot calling the kettle black" post, but - is it too much to ask that words be spelled correctly? You're (where you are is clearly indicated) and not your -- facilities and not facilitys -- are two I came across today. I know this marks me as petty and pedantic but that shoe seems to fit pretty well.
