I just read something that leads me to believe bottoms may experience elongation of their upper extremities.

Anyone feel like helping me run some tests to verify?

Upgrading a vibrator - step 2 complete

Connecting the vibrator to the computer was a little more complicated than I thought it was going to be, but not by much.

The way the Microcomputers are designed, the voltage pins are not variable, so I couldn't just hook the vibrator to the power output and regulate it that way as I originally thought I could. It was always on at 100% (3v)

When I realized that wasn't going to work, My second thought was that I could use one of the data pins in "output" mode to drive the motor. I know for a fact that you can vary the output and through what referred to as PWM (Pulse width Modulation) to simulate a variable output for devices like LEDs and motors.
That attempt also failed, however that was because there was SIGNIFICANTLY less current coming out of the data pin than the power pin, and wasn't strong enough to turn the motor.

After doing a little bit of research I found the perfect tutorial which outlined what I needed to do in order to get the motor running, and included a schematic and itemized part list. I couldn't have hoped for a better find! I actually had spares of everything from the parts list! After about 15 mins I had everything pulled and connected. Shortly thereafter I programmed it with a rolling pulse... starting at 100% and dropping 25% each second, and resetting itself at 100% after the 0.
(Every 5 seconds its back at 100

I think the next step is going to be incorporating some kind of sensor that I can use to change the output strength or pattern.

This is a little more difficult that I thought it was going to be.
The small soldering iron I was planning on using isn't generating enough heat to melt the solder in order to connect my lengths of wire to the motor.
The other challenge is that the barrel that contains the heating element on my "normal" soldering iron is about the diameter of a AA battery. As previously mentioned, AA batteries fit very snugly in the compartment which means I have very little room to either see what I'm doing or solder without making contact with the plastic.

As a workaround, I bent the small loops from the notor mount up, and fed a small length of wire through it before folding the loop back down to hold the wire in place. Its not perfect, but when I connect those 2 lengths of wire to a battery, it starts buzzing.

Step 1 complete, Now comes the fun part... Programming!
I'm going to start with a simple pulsing signal. Once I figure out how to get a basic repeating pattern going, I'll then worry about complicating things by adding sensors that will change the strength and regularity of those signals.

Taking advantage of boxing day sales, I bought a cheapie vibrator online, solely so I could try and upgrading it with a programmable Microcomputer, as a replacement for the normal dial that is used to control the speed/intensity for what will hopefully be a more interactive experience.

It was delivered today, and upon opening it up I was both impressed and disappointed with how sketchy the battery compartment was. As opposed to the normal bars and springs I'm used to seeing in a battery hatch, the batteries are directly resting on the positive and negative contacts of the motor.

The other thing I noticed was that the battery compartment was on the small side. It look a little effort to fit both of the AA batteries into it for testing. Happily it worked. The challenge came though when it was time to take the batteries out, because they were stuck. I needed to use a set of needle-nosed pliers to pull then out.

On paper, it should be relatively easy to solder a couple of wires to those motor loops, which I can then run out to the microcomputer, for controlling the voltage...

We'll call that "Step 1"

Some People like PVC, others like leather and lace... as for me?
I'm a vinyl guy.

I've experienced 2 aurgasms in my life... they are mind-blowingly incredible things, and I want experience more.

Its always a good day when the mailman delivers a new record for my collection., When he drops of 3 at once, well, that's downright phenomenal!

Since I first heard it was in the works, several months back, I've been excitedly waiting for my copy of "Exit Wounds", the latest from the WallFlowers... thinking back how much I've enjoyed listening "Bringing Down the " over the years (That's the one with One Headlight and The Difference on it.)

As anticipation was building for that, it was announced that Los Lobos were also in the studio, cutting a new album. I have admit I've never been a fan of theirs...
Its not because I don't like their work, but because I've never been exposed /connected with it... aside from La Bamba, which has long since ended in the uninteresting bucket, account of growing while it oversaturating the airwaves in 1987/88 with the release of the movie of the . That said, I'm looking forward hearing what else they're capable of doing. They wouldn't still be around if they didn't know what they were doing, right?

The third album is a complete wildcard for . Aside from seeing their a kickstarter campaign, once, I'd never heard of The Drive-by Truckers. I do love the though, which is probably why it stuck with .
Its great finally be able give them a listen, and seeing that they've released a TRIPLE ALBUM it will give a good base figure out if I like them or not.

As much as I want check out Exit Wounds, I think I'm going start with the Truckers... its got curious.

After updating the printer with with a tempered glass print bed, it was time to get back to building this thing.

I'd realized that as far as first attempts go, it may have been a little ambitious to start with my original ring designs in hopes of keeping things small. The problem was that though was the external battery pack that would have been required to run it.

As a solution, I've mounted one motor on either end the battery pack .

I tested it out this AM, and thankfully it runs. Huzzah!
Now comes the fun part... with the internal mechanisms all figured out and in place, its time to come up with a fun design for the body that is going to house it...
Any Suggestions?

Not only did I get that fifth model printed, I did it three times. Yay me! (sarc)

when I first set up the print job for the perpendicular motor, I set it to print on a 45^ angle to the bed, kinda like an A frame. You can see an example in the upper right of the image below.

Unfortunately, the finish was horrible. it looked like a half melted ball of tangled nylon string.. Ok, maybe its not that bad but it sure isn't anything I'd call good.

So I did what I didn't want to do, but knew I was going to do anyway, and reworked the file one more time before bed. I tweaked it so the model was going to print vertically using the motor mount as the base, with the ring atop it.

When I woke up this AM, after a quick detour to get the caffeine drip started, I grabbed up the memory card and got to printing. Here's the catch... even though I reworked the file and plugged in the memory card, I didn't actually transfer the file.

Soooooo yeah, I ended up reprinting that design. I've got to say that I'm glad that I did. This incarnation seems to be a lot cleaner and a bit more structurally sound.

Once that finished, I printed the file I actually wanted to print.
I have to say, it does look pretty sharp. The downside to this design though is that the interior of the motor housing is filled with scaffolding that I'm going to have to remove.... I'm not saying its a bad thing. It might actually be beneficial as any remaining bits of the support structure will help to hold the motor in place.

That said I guess my next update will be once I've had the time to get those 2 models cleaned up... unless of course I'm hit by another flash of inspiration that is.

It took a few attempts to get the sizing right, but I've finally got the base for a rumble ring that fits both my thumb and the motor.

Huzzah!

Now, of course, over thinking things like I do, I'm wondering if I would be better off flipping the motor housing 90^, so its standing perpendicular to my thumb instead of laying parallel to it.

As much as I want to shut this down and back with a little WarstoneTD. I know that if I don't jump on this now and get it done that it'll be bugging all night.
At least it should be easy as I can just rotate that one piece, reslice the model and get it going... hopefully no more than 30 mins.
*knock wood*
